How humic and fulvic acids affect soil structure, nutrient uptake and root development, and what to look for when choosing a potassium humate.
Soil fertility depends not only on the nutrients the soil contains but also on how easily plants can take them up. Humic substances are natural compounds that act as a bridge between soil and plant.
What is humic acid?
Humic acid is one of the main components of humus, which forms as plant and animal residues decompose in soil over many years. It is extracted from natural sources such as leonardite and is generally used in agriculture as its potassium salt — potassium humate.
What is fulvic acid?
Fulvic acid also belongs to the humic substances, but its molecules are smaller and it dissolves readily in water. This helps nutrient mobility and makes it suitable for foliar programmes as well.
Benefits of humic and fulvic acids
- Soil structure: supports aggregation, helping improve aeration and water infiltration.
- Water and nutrient retention: supports cation exchange capacity and helps reduce nutrient leaching.
- Nutrient availability: helps keep nutrients in plant-available form.
- Root zone: supports root development and biological activity.
- Stress periods: contributes to more balanced nutrition under salinity, heat and drought.
Liquid or soluble (flex) potassium humate?
Liquid potassium humates are ready to use and easy to inject through drip irrigation. Highly soluble powder (flex) forms are easier to store and transport, dissolve quickly and fit both drip and foliar programmes. Choose according to your irrigation system, application frequency and storage conditions.
When and how to use it
Humic acid programmes usually start at planting and early growth and continue at regular, low-dose intervals during the season. Applied together with fertilisers, humates help improve fertiliser efficiency. Rates and timing vary by product, soil and crop, so always follow the label and expert advice.
