Why Sulfur Matters in Agriculture and How to Balance Soil pH – Nano-S S-80 SC Elemental Liquid Sulfur

The role of sulfur in plant nutrition, pH management on calcareous soils, and the traditional calcium polysulfide (lime sulfur) solution.

Sulfur is one of the essential plant nutrients, following nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. With lower atmospheric sulfur inputs and more intensive production, sulfur deficiency is becoming more common in many farming areas.

What does sulfur do in plants?

  • It is part of proteins and certain amino acids.
  • It plays a role in chlorophyll formation; deficiency can cause yellowing of young leaves.
  • It affects flavour and quality in onion, garlic and brassicas.
  • It helps plants use nitrogen efficiently.

Elemental sulfur and soil pH

Much of Türkiye’s farmland is calcareous with high pH, which can limit uptake of iron, zinc and phosphorus. When soil microorganisms convert elemental sulfur into sulfate, they create an acidifying effect that helps balance pH in the root zone. Liquid sulfur in suspension-concentrate (SC) form can be distributed evenly through irrigation systems thanks to its fine particles.

What is calcium polysulfide (lime sulfur)?

Calcium polysulfide is a traditional solution containing calcium and sulfur, made by processing lime and sulfur with water. Known in Türkiye as “gülleci bulamacı”, it is used mainly in orchards in winter and early-spring hygiene programmes.
