In Mediterranean climates, greenhouse temperatures can quickly exceed what crops tolerate in summer. Excessive light and heat can cause flower and fruit drop, sunburn on leaves and fruit, and quality loss. Greenhouse shading is one of the most practical ways to manage these risks.
What is greenhouse shading?
Greenhouse shading means applying a thin layer that reflects part of the sunlight onto the outside of the greenhouse cover or onto the plant surface. The layer reduces the light and heat entering the greenhouse and keeps the climate more stable. It is also known as greenhouse whitewashing.
Shade powder vs. shade gel
- Shade powder: forms a reflective, breathable film and is economical; it gradually washes off with rain and irrigation.
- Shade gel: adheres more strongly thanks to its gel structure, reduces drift and gives a more uniform, longer-lasting coat.
- Greenhouse roofs: products made for roofs give uniform coverage over large surfaces.
- Open field: shade powders can protect plant surfaces from sunburn.
When to shade
Shading is usually applied in late spring, when light intensity and temperatures begin to rise sharply. Climate, crop and greenhouse type determine the timing. In autumn, when day length and light intensity fall, the shading layer should be washed off so the crop gets enough light.
Tips for effective shading
- Apply on a calm day with no rain expected.
- Mix the product thoroughly at the recommended rate for uniform coverage.
- Avoid over-shading; plants need enough light for photosynthesis.
- Clean the layer off at the end of the season to restore light transmission.
